I became a Peer support worker as I wanted to aid other people in their recovery from addiction, having experienced falling through the gaps myself. I eventually got help from some fantastic people and started my recovery journey and now I am determined to help others start and maintain their journey.
I am based at Nottingham city south Local mental health team, but I see people from all over Nottingham.
As my role is community based, I go out on visits to see people either in their home or in a public place for example. I am also able to accompany them to appointments or any other engagements they may may need support with. No two days in this job are the same and my role is incredibly varied, just like the people we work with.
The people I see as part of my role are in varying stages of their recovery - some just beginning to think it may be time to address their alcohol or substance use, some making changes in their life already and some that are abstinent.
As well as having supported people preparing for inpatient detox or following reduction plans in order to become abstinent, I also help people engage with other services, whether it be attending The Recovery College, engaging in community rehab at The Academy at The Wellbeing Hub or giving them the support and encouragement they need to socialise more or engage in activities outside of the house.
In my experience, having someone with lived experience as part of their support network is hugely beneficial to the people I see. My involvement might be the first time they have been able to speak about addiction to someone who truly understands where they are coming from, especially in a professional capacity.
