Course overview
This course gives an overview of the issues surrounding drug and alcohol misuse in the workplace, using a variety of teaching and learning methods to suit most learners. The course is interactive, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and explore the issues. Wherever possible we use volunteers or staff with lived experience of the issues to co-facilitate the training, which brings the subject to life and enhances the impact of the course.
In this course you will:
- Increase knowledge, understanding and awareness of substances, their names, effects and dangers.
- Overview of the impact of drug and alcohol use in the workplace
- Signs and symptoms of drug and alcohol misuse for employers to be aware of
- Gain insight into employee experiences
- Learn how to approach an employee whom you suspect of having a problem and provide appropriate support
- Learn how to recognise the link between poor performance, health and drug and alcohol abuse
- Be aware of your own responsibilities with respect to legislation and the law governing drugs and alcohol in the workplace
- Understand the importance of, and how to put together, a drug and alcohol policy in the workplace
- Understand whether screening may be acceptable for your workplace
- Know what types of treatment and support services are available locally
- Gain insight into the unexpected benefits of employing those in recovery from drug/alcohol issues
Course outcomes

- Feel more confident about employing those in recovery from drug/alcohol issues
